RADIO REPRESENTATION & EPISODE 1

A few months ago in The Media Show on Radio 4 there was a portion with Sound Women, an organisation started to tackle male dominance in radio, because they were closing down. The segment began with an eye-opening statistic: when the organisation began in 2011, only 1 in 5 voices on radio was female. To put this in perspective, British radio listenership is 50/50, if not 52/48 majority women.
Jane Garvey of Women's Hour and Fi Glover of The Listening Project were on representing Sound Women during the show and shared some anecdotes of existing as a woman in this industry. They spoke about attending an awards show, and how almost every woman on stage was there to present an award, and almost all of them had their appearance commented on. Paired with the fact that Radio 2 has no women on daytime shows (despite being the most popular station in Europe), why wouldn't women be scared away from a career in radio?
After hearing that show I started getting ready to start my podcast. I figured if our national service broadcaster won't represent us, I should. I decided to make the first discussion point the truth of our financial lives. Young people in the UK are struggling against an economy that doesn't serve us and corporations that don't care about us. Despite all of this, we are mindful with our spending habits and are careful not to put our money into the wrong hands. I interviewed my mum for this episode to provide a cross-generational comparison where the disparities of income and cost of living are plain to see. Spoiler alert: the cost of buying her first home was actually relative to her income, mine is not!
Check out episode 1 below for my feelings on the topic sandwiched between my favourite tracks of 2016:
